8/30 Resources (1) Submit plan of study; submit a list of good/bad publication forums in your current area of interest (consult with advisor/senior graduate student on this).  Include a paragraph that discusses why one of the good forums is classified as "good" and why one of the bad forums is classified as "bad"
9/6 Tea House Meet at 3:30 p.m. in front of the coffee cart on the first floor and walk to Dushanbe tea house.  Alternately, you can meet us there at 3:45.
9/13 Learning the literature Browse citeseer, ACM digital library, google scholars.  For each resource, submit a paragraph that points out its strengths.
9/20 Evaluating/writing papers

 

Read the following guidelines for writing papers: OOPSLA-1, OOPSLA-2, CHI

Read one conference paper of your choice and fill out this form (from CHI) about the papers.

9/27 Evaluating advisors and topics

Interview one senior PhD student and one faculty asking them what they think are the most important criteria for a productive advisor-advisee relationship and thesis topic.  Submit a one page report summarizing your interviews..

10/4 Evaluating/presenting talks Read this paper. Put together a 10 minute talk on a topic of your choice.
