This pages gives you a partial impression of my new surroundings (for my Swiss friends). Being a proud Swiss, I'd also like to give you a short impression of some cool Swiss things (for my friends here in the US).
I ride the bus to University and back home. Usually I take RTD's SKIP.
I went through a downgrade in newspaper quality (compared to the high quality European papers like Die Zeit). Now I'm reading the local Denver RockyMountainNews daily (yearly subscription for $5, the only drawback being that you don't get the Thursday issues).
Here are some restaurants I've tried: Chili's Grill and Bar (Boulder), Sink (Boulder), Teresa's Pizza (Boulder), Ruby Tuesday (Boulder), Olive Garden (Boulder), Red Robin (Boulder), Outback Steakhouse (Louisville), BD's Mongolian Barbeque (Denver),
I like watching movies. Especially in the International Film Series. Or just some normal movies in the normal Boulder cinemas. The most impressive movie theater is the Boulder Theater which also hosts other events.
From time to time I have to look up a phone number in the phone directories of USWest.
Since the Table Mesa Shopping Center has a King Soopers I often buy my groceries there. From time to time I go to Safeway, though.
I plan on biking a lot this summer. BoulderCycling is a nice site for bike related stuff. The Boulder Off-Read Alliance is involved in trail maintenance in Boulder County. The BCN Bike Page provides a host of links to other bike resources.
Switzerland is the country of high quality. We provide high quality products and we have a high standard of living. Swiss are not actually rich, as is often assumed. But we value good quality.
The original Swiss army knive is produced by the Swiss company called Victorinox.
The world's most important watch manufacturer is the Swiss Swatch Group. It owns brands such as Breguet, Blancpain, Omega, Rado, Longines, Tissot, cK Watches (yes Calvin Klein), Certina, Mido, Hamilton, Pierre Balmain and, of course Swatch. And it invented a the Internet Time.
The Swiss company Pi Design creates very innovative designs, like some of the bodum coffee makers, tea pots, salad bowls, ...
The world's most refreshing airline is, of course, Swissair.
In Switzerland we have the world's best looking cows. And they produce highest quality natural organic milk.
Milk is one of the basic ingredients of chocolate. Switzerland produces the world's best chocolate. Lindt, one of our major chocolate companies, produces the popular Lindor balls.
Switzerland is the country of cheese. As you might know, cheese (like chocolate) is produced using milk. Actually, did you know that there is no such thing as Swiss Cheese. This name is used in the US to denote some pretty mediocre cheese not produced in Switzerland. Switzerland does not only produce one kind cheese, it produces hundreds of different kinds, all in small local companies. You should definitely try our Emmentaler (the one with the holes), Gruyère, Tilsiter, Sbrinz, Appenzeller, Vacherin Mont-d'Or, ...
We Swiss had the nice idea of melting cheese by heating it in varios ways before eating it. One of our high-quality cheese companies, Gerber Käse (in my hometown, Thun) produces a very good cheese fondue. Fondue usually is a mix of 1/4 Emmentaler and 3/4 Gruyère. Another very nice way of eating hot cheese is called raclette (see Raclette Suisse).
And if you ever wondered why eating bread were nothing special, well, then you have to try real Swiss bread. It's so tasty, has a wondreful crust, is... it's just the world's best bread.
